CARE PLAY: Community And REsearch PLAYing together using physical literacy knowledge translation tools targeting children with disabilities in Quebec
Children with disabilities participate less than their peers in physical activities, and their levels of physical activity are often below the minimum recommended for a healthy development. A comprehensive approach to address physical activity is ‘physical literacy’ (PL). PL builds on basic movement skills as well as child confidence, motivation, understanding and valuing, to ensure sustainability of active physical behaviors.
Our previous work shows that PL is being applied in different contexts (e.g., education, sports) over the last decade in Canada. However, its use and implementation vary across provinces, and is still limited for children with disabilities, as perceived by the healthcare providers across Canada. This warrants a further investigation to map the challenges and resources, specific to each province, in the access and delivery of PL programs. Therefore, this project aims at:
- Validating the knowledge and use of PL programs in QC
- Identifying existing resources related to PL for children with disabilities in Quebec, and
- Bringing partners together to propose PL promotion for children with disabilities in QC
