Co-Creation of Leisure Experience in an Inclusive and Accessible Theatre Space: The Case of the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.

Project description
This project will examine challenges that restrict individuals with disabilities from engaging in cultural recreation and leisure activities, such as theatre performances. In this two-tier project, we are interested in examining how all stakeholders enjoy live theatre and examine the challenges in accessing and attending live performances. Second, this project centers around a “relaxed performance” at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts in Montreal. The Segal Centre has taken important steps to improve physical accessibility and provide assistance at performances; however, the environment and information provided to audiences are not universally accessible for persons with limitations (e.g., vision, hearing, language and communication).

Objectives
1) Guided walkabouts with diverse stakeholders and 2) preparation and presentation of a relaxed performance will be organized to enrich the theatre experience for everyone. A pre- and post-evaluation will guide this process and provide potential strategies for engaging people of all walks of life in performances across Montreal and beyond.
