Inclusive Society’s exchange Forum: Participatory Research and Disability

September 30, 2021, 8:30 to 12 pm

Inclusive Society’s exchange Forum will be an opportunity to learn more about the research projects supported by Inclusive Society, to reflect on how the results can be useful to the community and to consider future developments. The roundtables will address the themes of employment, education and the challenges of organizations in the new reality.

This year, the event will take place entirely online, on Zoom.

Six projects supported by Inclusive Society

• SMARTBELT Project: This project aims to determine if the use of a vibro-tactile belt equipped with several microphones would allow its user to estimate with greater accuracy the direction of a sound source.
• Virtual Reality Project: This project aims to better understand the impact of social cognition on an important mobility task involving social interaction and collision avoidance with pedestrians and the deficits associated with the sequelae of chronic moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The ultimate short-term goal is to raise awareness of these deficits and, in the long term, to improve the participation and inclusion of these individuals in social life.
• Museum and Universal Accessibility Project: An inventory and analysis of Quebec museum practices in terms of universal accessibility and the needs of people with disabilities in the context of visits will be carried out. These results will lead to the formulation of general and specific recommendations for a better inclusion of people with disabilities.
• Theater and Accessibility Project – Segal Centre: This project to co-create a playful experience in an accessible and inclusive theatre space explores the challenges that limit the participation of people with disabilities in cultural and leisure activities such as theatre performances.
• Internet Browsing and Visual Impairment Project: This project aims to co-create an assistive device for Internet browsing for people with visual impairments.
• Deafblindness and Communication Project: This case study in deafblindness aims to test the clinical, social and economic feasibility of new face-to-face communication modalities.

Roundtables (in French)

Roundtable A – What is employment inclusion?

Based on a presentation of the different ways of accessing the labour market, we will discuss the challenges and successes of integrating and maintaining employment for people with disabilities.

• Francis Charrier, doctorant au Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherche en Réadaptation et Intégration Sociale (CIRRIS), travaille sur la conciliation vie professionnel et vie personnelle pour les personnes en situation de handicap. Roundtable B – Ensuring accessible and inclusive post-secondary education. Obstacles and solutions

Although there has been a significant increase in the number of students with disabilities in post-secondary institutions, many challenges remain and new issues are emerging in relation to the inclusion of these students.

This roundtable brings together various stakeholders from this field to discuss the challenges and solutions to be implemented in order to ensure an accessible and inclusive post-secondary education for all.
